What Makes Old Bills Valuable?

Several factors determine whether an old bill is worth more than face value. The most important is the series year and note type. Bills printed before 1929 (large-size notes) are almost always worth a premium. Gold certificates, silver certificates, and national bank notes carry higher values than standard Federal Reserve Notes from the same era.

Condition is the second biggest factor. A crisp, uncirculated bill can be worth 5 to 10 times more than the same bill in heavily circulated condition. Professional grading services like PMG and PCGS Currency authenticate and grade notes on a standardized scale. Learn more in our paper money grading guide.

Beyond age and condition, star notes (replacement bills), fancy serial numbers, and printing errors can all add substantial premiums regardless of denomination.
